Western Isles Strongest Man 2002

Venue: Tong Recreation Centre, Tong, Isle of Lewis
Time: 12.00-5pm approx.

This year we had a total of 10 eager strongmen, they were Iain MacKay, Alistair Finlayson, Greg Brown, Stuart Morrison, Gordon Kay, Iain Murray, Raymond Christie, Ewan Cameron, Dave Eastwood and Steve Ferguson.

 


The Car Pull
A Landrover Discovery had to be pulled over soft grass. Thanks to Ewan for letting us use his 4 by 4, it was only later he mentioned "that the brakes might be binding a wee bit". The strongmen had to attempt to pull the Discover over the 25 meter course. No one managed the full pull due to the softeness of the ground and those dragging brakes. The placing for the first event were as follows:

The Log Lift
In log lift the weight has to be lifted from the floor to above the athletes head. The athlete's elbows must be completely straight before it can be taken to be a good lift. Weight will be continually added to the bar until we have an overall winner. The placing for the second event were as follows:

The Stones
Five stones have to be lifted onto whiskey casks. The casks are approximately 5 feet high. The stones are 100, 100, 120, 130 and 145kg in weight. The athlete who places all the stones on the barrels in the fastest time will be deemed the winner of the event. The placing for the third event were as follows:

Farmers Sprint
The final event is the Farmers Sprint. Athletes have to complete a 50 meter course in the fastest possible time while carrying two 90kg gas cylinders. The athlete who completes the course in the fastest time will be deemed the winner. The placing for the final event were as follows:

The Final Placings

Congratulations to Stuart Morrison on his win, this is the first time in the history of the event that it has been won by a local Strongman.
